Preparation

I am waiting everyday for applications to open for school.  As I wait, I attend births here and there (about one per week).  Read incessantly about birth, watch movies about birth, talk my husband's ear off about birth and ask every pregnant woman I see how she's doing.  I have been radically changed by things that I've learned this year.  The women that I have Doula'd for have taught me so much about birth, it's unbelievable.

Did you know that some women enjoy some of the aspects of birth so much that they are actually smiling while they are pushing their babies out?  I recently attended a birth where the room was dark and quiet and the mother reached down to help her baby come to the world.   It was the first time that she picked up her baby and it made me think, what if every woman could pick up their baby for the first time like this woman did?  What would our society be like if we supported women through birth instead of putting them through the system?  I think it would change us.  I think that women would feel stronger and that they would be better mothers then they already are.  The power that is in the moment of birth is just so amazing that there are hardly words for it.

The preparation that I have been going through is so intense.  It's amazing.  It draws me in.  I come home energized.  I love my kids more, I love my husband more.  And these women, they are so amazing.  So, here's to my clients, may you all be blessed with a birth that you will cherish forever.
