Has the "Magic Touch"

posted Jun 17, 2017, 3:17 PM by Lisa Baracker   [ updated Jun 18, 2017, 7:20 PM ]

Judy Behr has been working for our family as an overnight nanny/postpartum doula since our baby was born four months ago. She takes care of our son overnight and provides great care for him. She gets up with him in the night, changes him, feeds him, and gets him back to sleep. She is also providing sleep training for our son. She has also started working for us during the afternoons/early evenings taking care of our son while we are out. We are very happy with Judy's work, and would recommend her to other families with no reservations and the highest confidence in her professionalism, easy going and helpful attitude and the ability to have the "magic touch" required to make our son smile every time he sees her. We are blessed to have her!

Genuinely Nonjudgmental

posted Jun 17, 2017, 3:13 PM by Lisa Baracker   [ updated Jun 17, 2017, 3:15 PM ]

Judy Behr was my birth doula for the birth of my baby at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley.

After several years of fertility treatments, when I was finally pregnant via IVF after years of trying, I searched for a doula late in pregnancy. Judy was kind enough to make herself available on short notice, and was very flexible about it. As a single mother by choice, I was relying on my own mother, my brother and friends support during my scheduled gradual induction and hospital stay. Thus, I wasn't sure I needed a doula it turned out to be one of the best decision I could have made.

With or without a partner, family support is nice. However, Judy offered a different kind of support an invaluable combination: empathetic and practical. She was incredibly flexible, genuinely nonjudgmental, and extremely affirming. Honestly, I still reflect fondly on her time with us. She made such a difference diffused stress between me and my mom by her very presence and by helping with the moment my mom found too stressful, I can't imagine my birthing experience without her. She's offered support since and been so incredibly sweet with my little boy making us feel so special.

To sum up, me and my entire contingent, we were very happy with Judy's work, and would recommend her to other families with no reservations and the highest confidence in her professionalism, easy going and helpful attitude.

Down-to-earth, Kind & Steady

Judy Behr was our birth doula on for our baby at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland.  We are so very glad that we decided to utilize Judy's help as our doula. I truly believe that it was because of her calming and encouraging presence that I was able to deliver my son vaginally. I also was so grateful how she was able to seamlessly integrate into my family and with hospital staff. This also bespeaks of how present and mindful Judy stayed through our birth process.  With that, of course I would recommend Judy to any family looking for a down-to-earth, kind, steady doula to assist at their birth.

Straightforward Answers... No Judgement

Whatadoula is an amazing practice. I love that they do home visits to go over the birth plan and see if there is anything specific that I felt needed to be addressed. It was also really nice to be able to voice my questions/fears and get a straightforward answer without having to worry about being judged.

During my very rapid and intense labor my doula gave amazing support, she knew when it was time to go to the hospital and helped me when I couldn't help myself. When my midwife didn't show up in time to help me, my doula let the staff know it was very important to me to have a midwife deliver my baby and asked for the midwife on-call. She spoke up for me when I couldn't. My birth happened so fast, I was so grateful to have my doula with me to hold my hand and help me push. She was calm and strong. Really she was the only one that I felt safe with because I knew she was experienced, caring and passionate about her work and there solely for me and my baby. She also helped me with breastfeeding which was a total success.

Thank you Whatadoula!! I will forever be grateful to you, Lisa, for starting such a wonderful group.

Caring & Informed About LGBT Issues

My partner and I were extremely fortunate to have Whatadoula as our doulas and highly recommend their services. Their presence, knowledge and support were so critical during the pregnancy and birth process. The birth of our child was such a special moment in our lives and we were glad Whatadoula was on our team.

As a gay couple, we felt Lisa & Yume were extremely caring and informed about the particular challenges that LGBT couples and families can face during this process.

Yume was the doula who came to our birth and she was excellent in her communication with the medical staff and our extended family who were there at the hospital. It was incredibly reassuring that Yume knew exactly what to do during the labor and when it was time to call the doctor to deliver the baby. She was right by our side helping us push and bring our child into the world.

The pre and post-birth visits that Yume & Lisa did were really useful for us. They are extremely knowledgable, listened to our concerns, and answered all our questions. They were very informed about the policies and practices of hospitals and went through our birth plan with us. It was great to have them walk us through the concerns we had with laboring at home for too long.

After the birth Yume created an herbal sitz bath that was instrumental in my healing - it really helped relieve the pain and discomfort I had when I came home. She also did my placenta encapsulation and provided me with pills that helped my postpartum recovery. Postpartum, I felt strong and my recovery was good - I can thank Yume in large part for that!

Truly an Angel

I am an orthodox muslim woman and trying to maintain my privacy and decency in a room full of people watching me give birth was so difficult. I lost track of my contractions because I just couldn't focus on giving birth to my baby. Lisa was such a blessing, she guided me through my labor, I am so thankful for her. If it wasn't for her I could have had a longer, more difficult delivery.

Thank you my sister, you are truly an angel.

Thank you for being there for us.

Can't Say Enough Good Things

After having a very traumatic birth with my first I was scared the second time around. I knew I had to find doula(s) that could help me navigate through my fear and advocate for me as I attempted a VBAC. When my husband and I interviewed Whatadoula we immediately knew they were the right fit. Lisa and Cathy have a wealth of knowledge. They understand and support both the medical side of birth and home birthing. For us we wanted a fusion of both. They helped us achieve a healthy and happy birth experience. The support, comfort and warmth is what we needed to guide us through a LONG birth experience. They also supported us after our daughter was born giving us advice on post natal care not only for myself and baby but my son and husband as well. I can't say enough good things about Whatadoula. They truly love what they do and we love them.

Exactly What We Hoped For

Hiring Whatadoula was one of the best (and most important) decisions that we made as we prepared for the birth of our son. The pregnancy unexpectedly became medically complicated at the very end, throwing many of the choices we had made up in the air, or so we felt. The doulas helped us navigate the complicated landscape of medical advice and evidence that we found ourselves in the middle of, and assisted us in making several decisions that proved key to avoiding the major interventions that we'd hoped to avoid in the first place. They also provided a caring, calming presence and perspective at times when we were desperately in need of both.

We very much enjoyed your collective level-headedness and good senses of perspective and humor, all of which helped us out at various points in the process. We also felt (and never were given any reason to see things otherwise) that we had hired calm, reliable, knowledgeable, and confident people who would help us to make it through a process that we weren't all that confident or knowledgeable about ourselves. We benefitted a lot from working with Whatadoula as a group, rather than just one individual - we felt that each of doula brought several unique characteristics to the table.

In the end, the birth went exactly as we'd originally hoped, and we have a beautiful baby boy and a very healthy mother!

I Was Ecstatic

From our very first meeting, Lisa made us both feel empowered and confident with all the information she had to offer. Thanks to her support we were able to labor at home as long as possible. In fact, when we arrived at the hospital all the nurses were surprised to learn that we were first time parents because we arrived at the hospital already fully dilated. I wasn't sure I could handle a natural birth, so I was ecstatic with how things turned out and wouldn't change a thing. Lisa made us feel safe, cared for, and empowered. Now we are recommending whatadoula to all of our friends!

Genuine Care For Our Family

posted May 6, 2013, 9:35 AM by Lisa Baracker   [ updated Feb 24, 2015, 8:54 AM ]

The Whatadoula team was a wonderful support during the exciting (and honestly sometimes stressful) journey into new parenthood. Dani and Cathy immediately felt like friends that we could open up and ask questions to. They comforted me when I was scared about childbirth and becoming a parent and helped arm me with knowledge and confidence. At first we were not sure if we wanted a doula, but I am so glad we decided to work with Whatadoula! It was not just helpful for me as the mother, but for my husband who was nervous about the birthing process. The doulas supported us together as a couple, in no way taking over his role as the father. I was hoping for a natural childbirth and I do believe that having the doula with us during the process helped make this possible. I think the nurses at the hospital even appreciated having our doula there. Even after our daughter's birth, the doulas were very helpful with breastfeeding and bottle feeding issues. We feel they were genuinely interested in and cared about our family, beyond the birthing process. The Whatadoula ladies were so great I hope to keep in touch with them and will always remember their support during this life changing event!
