Doula Internship

Whatadoula is looking for an intern to assist in doula care and childbirth advocacy for women and their families in the Bay Area this Summer. Engaging collaboratively with our core Doulas, the Whatadoula Intern will work to improve knowledge of informed birth and reproductive health choices among women and their partners primarily in the East Bay Area. We are looking for a dedicated newly trained doula or person interested in becoming a doula or women's health care provider. This position requires a commitment of 10-24 hours a week.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Working with Whatadoula from 6mo to 12mo (depending on individual intern timeline)
  • Attendance at 1-2 prenatal/postpartum appointments per week. 
  • Attendance at all Group Prenatals during tenure.
  • Meeting with new clients for intake interviews.
  • Attending prenatal and postpartum visits in a shadowing capacity; assisting in doula care at these visits DOE.
  • Participating in Whatadoula on-call rotation to attend births with the families who choose our doula practice for their families. 
  • Scheduled mentorship meetings with Executive Director on a weekly basis (either in-person or via skype, facetime, etc.). 
  • Experience and familiarity with Childbirth, Sexuality and Reproductive Health Issues
  • Ability to relate in a non-judgmental, supportive basis to individuals with a wide range of needs and problems; ability to provide responsible information and support.
  • Emotional maturity, sense of humor, and the ability to work with diverse group of unique personalities. 
  • Commitment to and understanding of principles of individual empowerment; to provide our families with essential skills necessary for them to utilize our doula services and get the most out of their birth experience.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of and difficulties faced by women and their families during both the prenatal and postpartum period.
  • Able to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to respond to pregnant clients on-call 24/7 during scheduled on-call shifts.
  • Reliable mode of transportation within a 26 mile radius of Albany, CA
  • Knowledge of community resources, especially public health resources.
  • Interest in doula work, social work, public health, midwifery or medicine highly desired.
  • Experience working with high risk populations, especially women covered by Medi-Cal a plus.
  • Current or in-progress Doula certification a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of html and Public Health a plus.
  • Doulas of color as well as Bilingual Doulas are encouraged to apply.
